The macula is located at the center of the retina and contains the highest density of photoreceptors. It is responsible for our central vision and colour perception. Macular disease can cause image distortion and loss of central vision, severely affecting activities of daily living.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is common. Exuative type of AMD can lead to acute profound visual loss. Early detection and treatment with intravitreal anti-VEGF injection can effectively control the disease. Epiretinal membrane and macular hole require vitrectomy operation to relieve the abnormal traction to the macula, thereby restoring the macular structure and improving vision.
